As a form of neurodiversity, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects individuals across the lifespan and can contribute to substantial difficulties in daily functioning.

The resulting executing functioning concerns can cause challenges across multiple life domains such as relationships, work, academics, and social functioning. Further, individuals with ADHD have an 80% likelihood of meeting criteria for additional psychiatric diagnoses increasing the likelihood of needing mental health treatment.

Excitingly, ADHD is one of the most treatable mental health diagnoses with the best prognosis if treated with intentionality and evidence-based practices.

In this workshop, we will review current thinking and research on the experiences and treatment of clients with ADHD across the lifespan. The information will be centered on ways to shift our clients’ knowledge of ADHD and Executive Functioning concerns to reduce shame, gain insight into their challenges of navigating the world with a Variable Attention Stimulus Trait (VAST) nervous system, and empower them to embrace their ADHD identity.

This workshop seeks to support clinicians in becoming neurodiverse-affirming therapists, working alongside our clients to assist them in embracing their unique brains and leaning into their lived experiences.

We will explore interventions and approaches including collaborative coaching, functional analysis, and evidence-based treatment approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), incorporating engaging experiential activities. Clinicians will learn about utilizing functional analysis, designing hacks, creating external structures, and utilizing curated, stimulating, and motivating interventions to become ADHD-empowering clinicians.

Training modalities will include lecture, clinical vignettes and demonstrations, experiential exercises, group discussions, and skills practice. The workshop is intended to be both professionally and personally meaningful for those treating clients with ADHD, clinicians with loved ones with ADHD, and those of us who are clinicians with our own ADHD diagnosis.
